George McClellan launched his amphibious operation to capture the Confederate capital at Richmond via the Virginia Peninsula. The Peninsula Campaign of 1862 brought the Civil War to the doorstep of the Curtis family when Maj. The Warwick Beauregards joined the 32nd Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 27, 1861. Curtis was made captain and several Curtis kinsmen served as officers. Curtis and other Warwick County residents answered the call to arms by the Confederate States of America in May 1861 when they organized a volunteer infantry company called the Warwick Beauregards on the grounds of Endview. He cultivated corn, wheat, and potatoes on the farm however, the couple’s prosperity was soon threatened by the Civil Warĭr. The young doctor renovated the old colonial structure and changed the name of his property to “Endview” to reflect the approach to the side of the house. Curtis was one of only two physicians in Warwick County, which eventually became part of Newport News. Humphrey Harwood Curtis, a great-grandson of William Harwood, acquired the plantation in 1858. Through the years, William Harwood’s home was passed on to relatives. Newport News, Virginia acquired the house and land in 1995.īesides the house which visitors can take a tour of and a small museum located on the first floor, the land offers viewing of the Curtis family cemetery that is kind of spooky, a natural spring that attracted not only military personal but Indians, and cabins in the far woods where soldiers stayed during the harsh winter months. The Curtis family returned after the end and the house remained in the family’s possession until 1985. The house and plantation was used as a Confederate hospital up until the end of the Civil War in 1864. The Curtis family moved to Danville soon after. Due to strong Union presence they had to retreat in May 1862. Doctor Curtis put his practice on hold to create a volunteer group called the Warwick Beauregard’s to help the Confederate Army. Not too long after they got comfortable, Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers to end the rebellion’s attempts, ultimately leading to Virginia seceding from the United States in April 1861. During the beginning of the Civil War it was placed outside of the direct family and given to Doctor Curtis and his wife who began his medical practice on the plantation in 1856. Throughout its history, the house has been passed down through the generations of the Hardwood family. Built in 1769, the house standing tall on Endview Plantation has seen more than 240 years of American history pass it by, as well as one Civil War right on top of it.
